Articulate Is Bad?

Political correctness is ruining everybody's ability to speak freely.  If you really listen to yourself when you speak, I'll bet you make statements that are politically incorrect every day.  But our friends understand that we are good people and don't hold our misstatements it against us.  Too bad we don't have reporters chasing us around and blabbing our errors to the world.  Yeah, yeah, people in the public eye must be held to a higher standard, but let's look at their past before we slam them for a misstatement.  A white politician called a black politician "articulate" a while ago.  What a gaff!  Let's ignore his voting record and his career support of minority issues and run him through the ringer!

Evidently, calling a black person "articulate" is an insult almost as bad as calling him the "n" word.  I was told by one of my black friends that, for a black person, being called articulate is like saying that they are good at acting white and they don't "sound black."  And an undertone of calling them the "a" word is that you are inferring that being black and sounding black is bad.  Amazing!  I thought that articulate was a compliment to a person of any color.  I thought that articulate meant that the person speaks with clarity and intelligence.  Dumb me!

I have written before about "intent."  This white guy's intent was to compliment the black guy.  Oops!  But don't be magnanimous and respond by saying, "I know that guy and he wasn't trying to insult me."  No, instead use it for political purposes and further the gap between the races.

Barack Obama IS articulate.  Unfortunately for him, he is smart too.  Maybe he should dumb himself down.  Barack Obama IS articulate.  It's his own fault.  If he doesn't like it, tough!
