Money is the Root of All Happiness

When I was growing up, I was taught that "money is the root of all evil" and that "money can't buy happiness."  I believed it for a long time.  I don't anymore.  It is not that these adages are false, they are just too simplistic and unspecific.  We live in a capitalistic society.  You cannot be anything but a bum if you don't have money.  As a matter of fact, by law, in most communities I know of, it is illegal not to have any money!  So acquiring money is something that every good American MUST do!

There is nothing evil about the big smile on a child's face when they get that one special present on Christmas morning.  It doesn't matter whether or not the money was earned, won, or stolen, the child is happy!  The adages are proven false in this case so the generalizations die.  That kid is not going to ask where the money came from and that kid could only be worse off without the happiness that the money has given.

Now for the real truth.  NOT having money is the root of all evil!  Lack of money makes otherwise good people thieves.  Yes, there are greedy people who seek more money when they have enough but the vast majority of people who steal are HUNGRY OR ADDICTED.  They need help!  And what causes this is the greediness of the rich who never have enough and don't care about anyone else.  Money can't buy happiness for rich people but it can for poor people.
