Is Anyone Honorable Anymore?

Golfers.  Golfers may be the only honorable people left in the world.  I saw a tournament once where this golfer was two strokes ahead going into the final hole.  His first shot went into the deep rough while his challenger's shot was right down the middle.

I watched as the leader walked into the rough.  No one could see his ball but him as the grass blocked our view.  He moved around a little but before taking a swing, he came walking back out and went to an official.  He talked for a few seconds and then went back to his ball hitting it out onto the fairway.  He ended up with a bogie and his challenger made birdie.

I thought the two golfers were tied but the TV announcer explained that the leader had accidentally touched his ball in the rough and that was a one shot penalty.  He came in second.  His honesty had cost him over $250,000!

Nobody would have known, except him.  I was with a couple of people and they were hooting.  "That idiot!"  "What a fool!"  And some other things I don't want to say.  I was afraid to say how much I admired that golfer.

I ask myself everyday if I am happy living in a world where self-interest and partisanship have beaten back honor.  All I can do is shake my head.  I am proud to be an honorable man.  I stick to my beliefs and I will always refuse to compromise my true feelings for anyone or any group.  I am open to other opinions and my mind can be changed, but I will never hide my real beliefs to forward someone else's agenda.
