Let Capitalism Ring

Man!  I hate it when I agree with Republicans!  All these government bailouts of business and housing are wrong.  We need regulation but with that limitation we must let markets rise and fall on there own.  Government intervention causes artificial changes in the market and disrupts the natural progression of the economy.  If a bank is going to fail, let it fail!  Another better run bank will fill the gap.  If a person is going to lose their house, let them lose it!  Prices dropping is not bad for new home buyers.  Leave the markets alone!  Let the car companies fail or redesign themselves to survive.  If they can't do it they deserve to die.  It's like giving your lazy cousin some cash.  In the short term they are better off, but when the money runs out, they are back asking for more.

Innovation is expensive.  Government money spent on infrastructure is fine.  It creates jobs.  They could give grants and tax credits to companies who will develop and deploy green energy systems like solar and wind.  Energy self-sufficiency may be the most important and pressing problem we need to solve.  And it can't wait!  One nuclear explosion in the Middle East would send gasoline prices over $10 per gallon!  What would that do to our weakened and very vulnerable economy?  How about a real depression!  We are worried now when we see the possibility of 10% unemployment.  How about 25% unemployment?!

Now I get to be my Socialist self.  Unlike Republicans, I want government to provide a solid safety net for the unemployed and the poor.  And the current safety net is woefully lacking.  I can't possibly live on less than $35,000 per year but the government thinks I should be able to live on $15,000. This is a joke!  Instead of giving the money to banks who have screwed up or homeowners that can't afford to pay their mortgage, give it to unemployed people and the poor.  We are told we need increased spending to stimulate our economy.  What do you think would happen to all the money given to unemployed and poor people?  It would get spent on food, clothes, medicine, and maybe even dinner at a nice restaurant, something low income people can't afford.

And then there are tax cuts.  Republicans want tax cuts for the rich but they love to point out that tax cuts and credits for lower income people is wrong because they pay no tax.  They are wrong.  Working poor people who pay no income tax actually pay a higher percentage of tax than most rich people.  Working poor people pay payroll taxes (FICA) and sales taxes.  Since their incomes are so low, their percentage of tax to income is high.  The payroll tax is regressive and unfair!

The bottom line to all this is that the best form of government is a combination of Capitalism and Socialism.  Capitalism with regulation should rule the business world but Socialism needs to kick in to provide a safety net for those not able to capture that elusive American dream.  People that fall below that line need help and they should get it!  Government needs to get involved in the business side to regulate and keep the playing field fair but on the human side they need to defend and protect the defenseless.
