Patriotism With A Bang

Fireworks have their place, I guess.  Public displays can even be spectacular.  But fireworks in the hands of your neighbors are more often a nuisance.  Every year there is at least one nearby person who acquires some firecrackers, bottle rockets, or Roman candles.  And I am rewarded by their disregard for their neighbors by being kept awake half the night.

July 2, 2008,  11:44 PM:  BANG!  It was big; bigger than a little firecracker.  It was like a canon shot.  I had been asleep for about half-an-hour.  "Oh man!" I said out loud.  And I wondered how much I would have to endure.  About ten minutes passed and I thought maybe that was it.  I was relaxed and then, pop... pop... pop.  Like some one was setting off little fire crackers one after the other.  I got up from bed and peeked out the window but I couldn't see anyone.  Pop... pop... pop.  No use calling the police.  I just got back in bed.  It stopped, but I had no confidence the quiet would last so I couldn't really sleep for about the next hour.  Then, as one might predict, the bottle rockets began, wheeeeeee, bang!  Pause.  Wheeeeee, bang!  I didn't really count but it must have been at least twenty mixed with more small firecrackers.  Jerks.  I fell asleep for good around 2:30 AM.   There was even more on July 3rd.

As I sit here typing, it's July 4th.  The sun has just set.  Many who saved their explosive stash for tonight have already started, and others will wait until I go to bed.  Thanks a lot neighbors.  Thanks for once again fortifying my belief that too many people are inconsiderate idiots!
