Like a Rock

I sat on a bench in a National Park looking down a long decline at a winding mountain stream.  I admired the beauty of it.  A stand of white barked, golden leaved aspen trees on the far bank stood surrounded by looming pines.  A bird cried out from high over my head but as I looked up I could not find it in the clear blue midday sky.  Behind me I heard a clack clack of stone on stone.  I turned to look up the steep hill from where the sound came and saw a single rock bounding and tumbling its way down toward me.  It stopped beside me when it hit one of the legs of my bench.  It was about the size of a baseball, mostly round and mostly a chalky white.  I looked back up the hill and noticed thousands of other rocks just like this one as well as many others much larger.  What made this one roll alone?  How could it be the only one, having no effect on all the others?  I contemplated my life.
