The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior

Martin Luther King is one of the greatest people in the history of the United States of America and the world.  His faith, courage, and determination were the driving forces behind a long needed change in the lives of millions of oppressed people.  He moved the minds of many racists to see that the oppression of any person or people is wrong and must stop.  He conquered the hearts and minds of millions without violence of any kind.

In his time there were many who opposed the Black People just because they were Black.  These people would stand up and publicly oppose the integration of Black people into American Society.  There are still people such as this today, but how are they perceived?  They are fringe elements, disrespected and dismissed by all real Americans!

We know now and will forever believe that this country must be the land of the free!  The shining example to the world that there is at least one place in the world where intolerance will not be tolerated.  We must fight with all our being to deny those who would usurp our rights.  ALL Americans must be afforded equal opportunity to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  And our wish would be that this philosophy be spread throughout the world.

His work is not done.  Our country is not fully free.  Many minds are still clouded by prejudice and fear.  Dr. King had many dreams, but to me, the most important one was:

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

This should be the dream of every American.  Judge me, if you must, but judge yourself first.  Are you trustworthy, honest, and have the courage to do the right thing, not just for yourself but for all?  Do you treat others with respect, especially when they don't agree with you?  Do you think before you act and do you demand that you be self-disciplined?  Are you fair and open-minded?  Can you be compassionate, understanding, and forgive others when their character is weak?  Can you be a good neighbor, stay informed, respect authority, and obey our laws?  But most of all, can you compromise and respect the outcome?

Remember that no one can be perfect.  When we stray from the path of good character, we must atone for our failing and get back on the path as soon as possible!  The Christians say it this way, "We are all sinners. Repent and be saved."
