Shedding the Wait

For years I have known that my overweight body is aging faster than the true number of years I have lived. People talk about dog years. Should there be blimp years? You age two years for every year you are morbidly obese. I remember when I was in my late twenties and weighed around 270 pounds. (Three weeks ago I weighed 342.) I went to the doctor for my annual checkup and the doctor commented about my obesity. “Ric, you don’t have any symptoms now, in fact your heart is healthy, but a man of your height and weight will probably suffer a heart attack in his 50’s. If you’re lucky, you might live through it. Otherwise you’ll be dead at 58. It would be my advice to lose weight now.” I heard the, “your heart is healthy” part, but I ignored the death part, until I turned 50. I began worrying about it a lot.

Now I’m nearly 54. The Presidential Primary races are in full swing and I am already tired of all of it. It all started way too soon for my taste. Unfortunately you can’t help but see all the candidates more than you might like. Anyway, I saw Mike Huckaby (Republican Gov. of Arkansas) doing a health awareness show with Lance Armstrong (Bicyclist extraordinaire). Mike was talking about how he lost over 100 pounds and is feeling very well. He had previously experienced symptoms of diabetes, but after losing weight and now with simple diet control, he no longer has those symptoms.

Lately I have had symptoms of diabetes, and frankly I have been a little worried about it. For years I have put off dieting or tried and failed. I always told anyone who would listen that the desire to do something about must come from within. You can talk all you want. People can talk at you all they want. Nothing will happen until you believe it yourself and you decide to take action. I thought to myself, “If a Republican can do it, I can!”

Thank you Mike Huckaby. You have helped motivate me to take action. It’s do or die… really!
