Dying in Vain or Dying in Iraq

I turned 18 in 1971.  The Viet Nam War was on and so was the draft.  What if I were drafted?  I had to work out in my mind what I would do if I were drafted.  My dilemma was caused by two important traits of my character.  First, I was and am a pacifist, and second, I was and am not a coward.  I faced the toughest decision of my life.  How could I honor my country and stay true to my beliefs?  My Mom wanted to send me to Canada.  I made a decision that if I were drafted, I would serve... but I would not kill anybody.  I would be a medic or a cook.  I'd go to the front lines but I would not fight.  I would risk my life for my fellow man but I would not kill.

Loyalty.  Honor.  Respect.  Since I was a teenager I have understood loyalty, honor, and respect.  Those who honor us with service to our country deserve the utmost of our respect.  And they deserve more than our thanks and a medal.  The families of those that die can never be repaid for their loved one's or their sacrifice.  And those who are injured deserve the best care and the easiest life our country can provide in repayment for their honorable service.

The order comes down, they put on their boots, and they go where they're told.  There is no room for someone who questions their mission.  They must do what they are told.  The soldier is not to decide if the cause is just or right.  It doesn't matter if his Commander-in-Chief is an idiot, he is a tool of the government.  His honor demands loyalty to his country and his superiors and, most of all, he must follow his orders within the guidelines of the service.

Those who disrespect a soldier's service are despicable and ignorant.  Whether the police action or the war is just or not, whether we win, lose, or quit, when a serviceman lays down his life for his country, HE CANNOT DIE IN VAIN!  He dies a hero to us all and he must forever be revered!

GOD BLESS AND KEEP OUR HEROES IN UNIFORM!
