Payback is a Bitch

The only thing that stands in the way of a person having everything they want is money.  Yeah, I know, money can't buy happiness.  And money can't buy love.  But money can ease your suffering.  A lot of money, like millions won in a lottery, sudden wealth or any large amount of money easily attained can cause problems for some people.  I'm talking about just enough money to ease the pains of life and make life just a little easier.

By the time I get my paycheck, it is all spent, or at least earmarked to be spent.  When you don't make enough money for anything extra or special in your life, you learn to do without.  When you get some unexpected money, it goes fast, first for necessities and then, if there is any left, maybe something nice.

I budget every dollar I spend.  I get paid every other week.  That means I get 26 paychecks a year.  When I make my budget, I plan on two paychecks a month.  That way every six months I get a paycheck that is unencumbered.  I use it for special things.  I used my last one to buy some used computers that my store was selling since it was closing.  And I bought some food for my pantry and freezer.  It seems like the money just flies away before I can even count it.

When the money is money, cash, currency, and you spend it, that is okay.  You earned it, you spend it.  But there is a danger... credit cards.  I can't resist them.  Need and stupidity drive me to use them.  I mean, the offer comes in the mail and I know what it means; debt.  I apply anyway.  And when the card comes, I block all the stuff about debt and use it to the limit.  I need new underwear, tools for work, and a new power supply for my computer.  There is always something I need that I can justify.  I don't gamble, go drinking, or buy drugs.  I buy stuff I need.  The problem is that now I have this payment to make every month for the rest of my life.  When I get more actual money, I spend that on things I need, not my credit card balance.  Sometimes I think that credit cards are just another way for the rich to feed off of everyone else.
