It's Not a War!

I have grown quite weary of hearing that what is going on in Iraq is a "war."  The war in Iraq is not a real war anymore, it is a "police action."  It was a real war until Saddam went into hiding.  When he ran, we won.  Non-state sponsored terrorism is crime, not war.  A real war can only be fought against another country.  We could win a war against another country.  We proved it by beating Saddam's Iraq.  But we have never been able to win "the war on crime" in our own country!  How are we going to win against all the terrorist criminals in the world?  Especially when we feed their cause and increase their ranks with new recruits by attempting to force our ways on their world through military force.

The first crime I can think of was when Cain killed Abel.  As long as there are men who wish to force themselves on others and take that which is not their own, there will be crime.  As long as there are men who are driven by greed without morals, there will be crime.  As long as there are men, there will be crime.  This police action against terrorist criminals will continue forever.  The best we can hope for is increased diligence by our intelligence services and better diplomacy by our governments.

The war is over.  We won!  We have shed our blood and expended our treasure.  We have taken it as far as we can.  There is no shame in leaving and it is not our failure.  It is time to go.  The rest must be settled by the Iraqi people.  Many will die.  But like a doctor watching over a terminal patient for whom he has done all he can, we must stand back and watch.  Our army cannot beat this disease that is centuries old; sectarian hatred.
