Loyalty Run Amok

Scooter Libbey is guilty.  He protected the Vice-President by lying.  His lies were big, but, in principle, we all do it at one time or another.  That does not make what he did right and it certainly should not excuse him from being punished.  That is what happens when you get caught.  Someone who does what he did, always thinks he did the right thing, illegal or not.  And he understands and accepts the consequences of being caught.

Even though I believe he must not be pardoned, I can't be a hypocrite and condemn him.  I have lied on many occasions at my job to protect my boss.  And I have been caught before.  My punishment was simply loss of face; embarrassment.  And I'm going to bring you all into the muck with me.  Admit it.  We all lie at one level or another and we don't feel that bad about it, especially if we are protecting our boss, friend, or loved one.

I love your hair!  That hat looks great on you!  No, that dress doesn't make you look fat.  My boss is in a meeting and he'll call you back.  Have you lost weight?  The check is in the mail.  I can't work because I'm, cough, cough, sick today.  The dog ate my homework.  The lying goes on and on.
