Simply Elegant

When so many people think of the word elegant they picture a bejeweled beautiful woman in a beautiful perfectly fitted evening gown.  The first thing you see emerging from the door of the limousine is a shapely leg and a pointed foot wearing a tasteful high-heeled shoe.  A sparkle glints off the rock on her hand as a smartly dressed servant takes it and helps her onto the red carpet of the city's most important party of the season.

I like to apply elegant to other things, especially solutions to problems.  The elegant solution is one that solves the problem in the most concise and precise way.  Many problems have many possible solutions, but the one that gets the job done and has a little pizzazz or handles it in a new way... that's elegant.

Then there's Marilyn Monroe.  In the movie Some Like It Hot she plays a character called Sugar Kane.  Sugar likes the word elegant.  Every time I hear the word, somewhere in my mind I recall the movement of her beautiful lips when she said, "That's simply elegant!"
