Work the Lock

Sometimes you are in a situation when being fast is important.  At times like that you need to concentrate on the task at hand and try not to be slowed down by anyone or anything that could distract you.  Just because you are not a secret agent or a thief doesn't mean that you can't identify with being under pressure to complete a task by a deadline.

There was a television show called Magnum P. I. that ran eight seasons from 1980 - 1988.  It was about an handsome but semi-bumbling private detective who solves crimes well, but can't seem to figure out how to make money, mostly because he takes on jobs from people who need help but can't pay.  Tom Selleck was the star.

There was one episode where Magnum was heading for his car, actually a car borrowed from a rich friend, when two Doberman Pinschers came running after him.  He rushed to the car knowing that once inside he would be safe.  He fumbled for the keys in his pocket.  He looked at the dogs racing toward him.  He had the keys.  Now he had to open the door.  He had to ignore the dogs and get the key in to open the door.  He said in a stressed but calm tone, "Work the lock."  In other words, concentrate purely on the task at hand, what you can control, everything else is distraction that hinders you from success.

I deal with stressful situations everyday at work.  I am constantly under pressure from coworkers and customers, and at the same time I am required to answer phones and give information.  Many times I have deadlines to meet.  Unfortunately, all the stuff going on around me stands in the way of the completion of my most important tasks.  The way I shut out all that noise, sharpen my concentration, and get my work done is to repeat to myself, in my mind, "Work the lock.  Work the lock"
