Over the Hill?

I turned 50 almost 2 years ago.  Growing up they always said that when you turn 40 you are over the hill.  I had no problem with 40.  Honestly, I think 50 is the new 40.  Well, for me, maybe 48 is the new 40.

I think that when you are young you are over the hill, cruising along effortlessly, without really having to work at it.  Your body seems to work as it should.  And then you turn 50.  That's when you are going uphill!  Every time you move something it hurts; knees, elbows, hands...  Your hair is falling out faster than it can grow back.  Your teeth are loose.  You go to the bathroom a lot.  And every time you go to the doctor he sticks his finger up your butt!  It's like walking uphill with a 100 pound backpack!

The worst part of getting this old is you finally feel death staring you in the face.  At some point when you are young, you figure out what death is.  It is bad and you don't want to do it.  With thought and counsel you finally realize that it is far off and you won't have to face it until you are old.  You know, 30 or so.  As you age the date moves farther out.

For over 40 years I have not worried about it, but now the feeling is back and this time no one can tell me it's irrational anymore.  Wow!  I wish Cher could slap me and tell me to "snap out of it!"

Oh well, I'll quit my bitchin' now.
